tubular track wheels

I noticed Gems post on wheel builds and am Interested in building a set of tubulars wheels for training/racing on the track, "mailnly for spriniting". Have no idea what to go for??
I'm thinking Dura Ace Hi flange track hubs, would be the way to go. Unsure of what type of rims and spokes to go for and where to get? Want the wheels to be nice and strong while trying to keep them as light as i possibly can. My weight is around 96k.
My current wheels are velocity deep v's 'clinchers' 32 spoke rear, 28 front, with standard velocity hubs. They are my only set of wheels so something with a little more performance would be nice without going overboard on price. Would appreciate any suggestions on what to go for Cheers

Hi Gemm,
I am very interested in this. I have the hubs. Where did Bec get the rims from?

Carbon 50mm Tubular

Hi I got the Carbon Rims from a store in China via a wholesale website aliexpress.com in the search area type in carbon rims and it will put you in contact with all the suppliers of the rims they have pictures of the rims and you can contact them direct to pick how many wholes etc... expect to pay around $220 us for a pair of tubular carbon rims. I think it was $50 for postage and they arrived really quickly. I got 28h and they seem to be ok. I will be putting them with some HF Dura Ace hubs....
I believe some spokes have just been ordered and some complete wheels may be hitting the track shortly.... With the help of a talented wheel builder

I was considering going 50mm front with an 88mm rear. The theory being that the 88mm will be stiffer.

Does anyone have an opinion on this?

They'll be stiffer in theory, and the spokes a lot shorter (hard to get double butted that short).
Downside is the spoke nip angle is greater and therefore weaker for the rim - from previous experience of the strongest and heaviest people (Furby!), this could be a problem. But at the cheap price of chinese carbon, it's not too expensive to find out!

I have a hongfu discount voucher if any body would like it (8%).
Gemm had recomended hongfu to me previously.
Jenny the contact is very nice and quick to comunicate.

I did some trig calculations on wheels when I was looking at going carbon before I got my campy pista's and came to the conclusion that anything 50mm or over I was better off with low flange hubs. Alex cycle in japan are good fast and cheap I have bought from them before + are about 20-25$ cheaper + lighter than the HF.

From memory 88mm and HF gives you over 8.5 degrees of spoke angle.

The other question is do you go single fixed, most wheels are asymetricaly drilled for road use so the nipple to drill/hole angles will match better. Or do you go fixed/fixed so the wheel is symetrical and easier to build?

Another thing to think about is the sidewall strength on the 88's which can vary depending on batch/manufacturer ect ect. For that reason I would not pick something on the extreme end but would pick from the middle of the range.
Most of the Chinese 50mm carbons are knockoffs of the older zip 404's and
test almost as good in the wind tunnel.

I'd go with those, plus there is lots of positive online feedback about the 50's.

Anyway idle thoughts, I am sure others have different and there own opinions. Short of being shown new data or information that's what I would go for.
Regards, Dale

Correct Dale, Stabmaster opted for low-flange on his superdeep rims for the same reason re spoke angle.

The rims come drilled with left and right spoke holes, but not leading/trailing.

This is the only detailed chinese technical drawing I have seen. I have asked for a couple but not got much in return. I have another but it is not as detailed.

I think there are two main types, the straight carbon like above or those that have the foamlining to the tire bed.

The second pic is often refered to as a gigantex.

Thanks Dale for all the info, very helpful. Now it's decision making time!! How are you finding the Campy Pista's? Richard has a a set of FFWD tubulars around 50mm deep I think? They felt super smooth to ride! I would like to go a little deeper and stiffer on the rear wheel! But if your saying the 88's could lack sidewall strength with the Chinese carbon then maybe best stick with 50's. looking forward to hearing some feedback from becf once she gets hers up and running!

How do the rims look? Just bought a track frame myself and need some wheels! Will keep watching this thread with great interest!

Thanks heaps for the advice Gemma & Dale.

I have followed Bec's lead and ordered a set of 50mm rims. What length spokes did you get for these rims Gemma?

I also noticed in a previous post you where offering lessons on wheel building in exchange for beer. Any chance I could sign up for one of your sessions?
