GPS for touring

Does anyone use a Garmin or other GPS system for bike touring? We are planning to ride from New York to Washington and thought it'd be best to have a GPS on board. Does anyone have thoughts on the Garmin 705 or 800? And can you punch in two cities... with the GPS giving you a route? Or do you have to input the route yourself?
