Shimano 105 Shifter Compatibility

I'm wondering if someone can help me. My 10 speed 105 5600 left shifter broke. Can I replace it with a 105 shifter from an 8 speed setup?

Thanks

Yes, but it won't trim or shift very well as the derailleur throw is different.

The 105 10sp LH shifters that were designed to be compatible with both double and triple chainsets are notoriously bad and renown for breaking. Might be worth trying to warranty it (because they've got another 'click' - the the potential triple - on a double badly set up you can overshift creating great stress on the cable and eventually stripping out the guts of the shifter).
the ideal number of bikes is one more than you currently have

Do you want a 105 5600 left shifter? I think I have one in a box somewhere. It's the double/triple compatible one though so Gemm's concerns still apply. It's a bastard to set up.
Two wheels good, four wheels bad. In a pinch, three will do...

How much? I would like to keep the same style - different looking hoods is not very asthetically pleasing.

At the moment all I can do is the trim shift. I think what you said Gemma about the cable getting tighter and tighter happened and then it just kind of went snap and stopped shifting.
